Jhalkathi is a tidy district with green fields, trees, rivers, streams, canals, immense beauty and an area of 758.06 square kilometers. The Dhanshiri river of poet Jibanananda Das's famous poem Abar Asibo Phirea is located in this district. This district has a glorious history. This district is located in the coastal region of Bangladesh and it has some characteristics. Famous rivers like Suganda Bishkhali Dhanshiri flow through this district.


Location: Jhalakathi district is geographically located between 200-20' to 22.47 North latitude and 90-01' to 90-23' East longitude.
 
Boundaries: Barisal district is located in the north and east of Jhalkathi district, Barguna district in the south, Patuakhali district in the east and Pirojpur district in the west of Jhalakathi.
 
Area: The area of Jhalkathi district is 758.06 sq km.
 
Administrative structure:
There are 4 upazilas in Jhalkathi district. The upazilas are- Jhalkathi Sadar, Nalchiti, Rajapur and Kathalia. There are 2 municipalities in this district; which are known as 'Jhalkathi Sadar and Nalchiti'. There are 4 police stations and 32 unions in this district. Among the unions 10 are located in Jhalkathi Sadar, 06 in Kathalia, 10 in Nalchiti and 6 in Rajapur. Besides, 471 villages, 412 mauzas, 31 union land offices and 89 haat-bazaars have been combined in this district.


Population (as per 2011 census):
 
According to the 2011 census, a total of 6,82,669 people live in Jhalkathi district; There are 3,46,161 and 3,47,929 men and women respectively.
 
Educational Information:
 
Jhalkathi district has 18 colleges, 09 technical colleges, 157 secondary schools and 36 lower secondary schools. Besides, there are 123 Madrasahs in this district; Of which 1 Kamil, 15 Fazil, 13 Alim and 94 Dakhil Madrasas.


Primary Schools: The number of government primary schools in Jhalkathi district is 584. Besides, there are 162 registered primary schools and 3 Child Welfare Pvt. B. Jhalkathi 22 in this district.
